Why can't I just call DigAlert?
DigAlert is a free service that allows utility owners to mark out their utilities in the public right of way to protect their assets. Calling DigAlert is the law for any form of excavation in the public right of way.The Way It Works. You simply dial 811 to notify DigAlert of your intention to excavate on a road, alley, sidewalk, or other publicly controlled area. DigAlert looks up the registered utility owners that may be effected within the Thomas Guide grid corresponding to your project area. A notice is sent out by DigAlert to each utility owner making them aware of your intentions, and giving them 48 hours to respond. It is now the utility owners responsibility to mark out their lines to the best of their ability to avoid conflict.
The Differences
No Location Restrictions. C Below can locate in both public and privately owned land. Schools, Hospitals, Factories, Commercial Properties and Residences are not covered by DigAlert.
Different Tools. C Below utilizes a vast array of locating tools often not used by utility owners. It is common practice for C Below to use two methods to verify horizontal and vertical locations, providing a much higher level of accuracy. Locating is C Below’s core business, not selling the service the utility provides.Options. C Below can not only tell you where the utilities are, but also where they are not. This is quite important when trenching or planning a building footprint and it is unknown what might be in the way. Private utilities not registered with DigAlert would not be marked out by calling 811. C Below can also identify rebar, PT cables, old footings or other hazards that may exist.

More Information. Aside from horizontal and vertical location, C Below can pothole to visually expose the pipe providing pipe diameter, material, and verified depth for mission critical lines such as gravity fed storm drains and sewers. We also offer internal video inspections of lines, often used to assess the condition of a utility.
-
Organization. Not only do you get a single crew identifying all utilities on your site, but the data can be mapped and delivered in a CAD file providing quality verified as-builts. DigAlert’s surface marks are made by different technicians per utility, often to a different Quality Level. Utilities are often simply marked out based on a set of plans and not verified. Once the marks on the surface are gone, they are gone. C Below can leave you with tangible product for future reference.
DigAlert is an amazing free service to protect excavators and utilities owners alike when construction enters the public right of way. When your scope of services requires information not covered by DigAlert’s scope of services, call C Below. Trained technicians are available for immediate dispatch.
